SunRun 2005

The Race of Mithras

What a blast!!!

You never know how an event will go until your guests turn up. This year, the Heartland Naturists, SunRun had a record turn out of 42 participants.

At 10:00am we began to assemble in bright 92 degree weather somewhere on the sunny Kansas plains. As the years have passed, I am amazed by the nice mix of people that support SunRun. This year was no exception.

We had men and women from ages 4 to gray. Best of all, there were some new faces this year. We hope that you will join us again next year!

SunRun is run through two large fields separated by two smaller fields and a couple of forested trails. Most of the hard running occurs in the two larger fields. Hydration is a key factor in any kind of race that occurs during the month of July.

Sandy, a.k.a. WaterGirl, is our savior when it comes to handing out the water and Gatorade in the far field. If you follow the SunRun course as I have intended it, then you will pass her water stand not once, but twice. For all of Sandys efforts, since our first SunRun in 2001, I thought it appropriate to recognize her efforts during our 2005 awards ceremony. For the first time, this years SunRun sponsored a grand prize to be competed for between the fastest man and the fastest woman. Because of physical differences between the sexes, I offered a 3-minute advantage to the women. Our grand prize was a cabana tent that is perfect for shielding one from wind, rain, or peering eyes. Because the cabana can also be staked into the sand it is also perfect for taking along to your favorite nude beach.

After the race, we held our awards ceremony with each victor receiving an appropriate prize and medal. The SunRun medallions feature an image of The Muse of Missouri. A prominent statuary piece at 8th and Main Streets in Kansas City, Missouri.

A picnic of fruit, sandwiches, beverages, and other various side dishes followed under the only shaded pavilion building available. This was well appreciated by everyone after a good hot run. For those who wished to take advantage of it, there was also swimming down by the lake and a free ten-minute massage offered to all participants by our past president, Marge.

I believe that everyone who attended The Race of Mithras had a real blast!!! Many of our new participants were charmed by the novelty of running a true 5K in the nude. Not only did we get to be buff in an outdoor setting, we also got to cover a good amount of natural Kansas prairie in the au natural. Nothing like the feeling of freedom!

The Heartland Naturists are working very hard to provide their membership with more outdoor opportunities.
